My Most Anticipated Games of 2024 – Midyear update

E3 Season has passed so it’s time to revisit the most wanted list for this year and see how it stacks up for the rest of the year. I’m dropping the 24 limit because it’s fun but doesn’t really add to the list. The games on the list have set release dates for this year or expected to launch this year.

Released: Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Nightmare Kart, Tomb Raider Trilogy, Open Roads, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Penny’s Big Breakaway, Tiny Terry’s Turbo Trip, Harold Halibut, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, System Shock, Alan Wake II: Night Springs (DLC), Final Fantasy XVI: The Rising Tide (DLC), Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree (DLC).

2025 Releases: Next Resident Evil, Pokemon Legends Z-A, Little Nightmares 3, South of Midnight

Removed: American Arcadia Port, My Friendly Neighbourhood Port (I just don’t think they’re happening), Dark Souls: Nightfall (Mod) (Development semi restarted).

Once again, this is not every game, just the ones I wish to talk about. Two of the games I wanted to talk about – Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn and Kunitsu Gami are already out, for example. Without further ado;

Star Wars Outlaws (30/8)

Star Wars games are surprisingly rare considering the popularity of the IP. While Ubisoft wouldn’t have been my first choice for an open world Star Wars title, Outlaws does seem to be somewhat decent from previews and I was gonna play it either way regardless of quality or development team. Just the way it is with certain franchises.

Astrobot (6/9)

Easily my most anticipated game of 2024. 12-15 hours of Platforming perfection sounds like absolute bliss to me. The previous 3 Astro bot games – two demos and a VR game – were really good. A full length experience has sleeper hit Game of the Year candidate written all over it.

Silent Hill 2 (8/10)

Despite my attempts at playing Silent Hill earlier this year were put on hold, I still intend to get through it and 2 before the release of 2’s Remake. Either way I win – If I like 2 but think the remake is naff then at least I like 2 and vice versa. I feel like I owe it t0o myself to play the original before the remake if I can, especially with a game like Silent Hill.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 (25/10)

I get it, I’m surprised too. I suppose the teasers for the game – “The Truth Lies” have piqued my interest enough to think about CoD and with that my nostalgia for playing Black ops 2 and 3. There’s a beta coming up and if I enjoy that then I’ll treat myself. I don’t know if I can dedicate myself to multiplayer anymore but the campaign should be good.

Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered (31/10)

Despite only playing the game for the first time this year, I’m already wanting to hop back into that world with all the improvements and bonuses a remaster brings. My most anticipated feature is a NG+ mode which should hopefully make the Platinum more cohesive. If I have to do another three playthroughs I will, I’d just rather not.

Slitterhead (8/11)

It’s an absolute coin flip as to whether this game will be any good or not but you know what? That’s okay. It’s not the game I originally thoguth it was going to be which was okay and the trailer doesn’t do a great job at selling it but I’m still going to be playing it. I might even be the first person to get the Platinum (fat chance but you know).

And now games without release dates (As of 24th July) that are still slated for 2024.

The Plucky Squire

I know just as much about this game as I did when it was first revealed yet my excitement hasn’t gotten any less. If any game on this list is delayed until 2025, I feel like it might be this one.

Hotel Barcelona

Once I got past my initial disappointment that HB was not gonna be the game I envisioned, I let myself enjoy what the game was actually going to offer. 2D Horror slasher boss rush platformer is a very specific genre but one I want to dive head first into.

The Alters (and The Thaumaturge)

The Thaumaturge is already out on PC, I’m just waiting for the console release.

Information on The Alters has been light but the combination of 3D exploration and management sim in a very interesting Sci-Fi setting has had me interested since day 1 and I’m excited to finally get a date.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

I’m still not entirely convinced First Person was the right move for the game but I can’t argue that the gameplay and cutscenes we’ve seen for the game aren’t super cool. Hopefully the game does well so we get more - Uncharted is done and Tomb Raider is in a lull, Indiana Jones can come back and show them how it’s done'.

Lots of Ports

Amanda the Adventurer, Buckshot Roulette, Chop Goblins/Squirrel Stapler/Iron Lung and Slay the Princess. All games already released on PC, all games that are coming to Playstation. I like getting Platinums and I am happy to wait for them. It’s going to be a fun Halloween season. (Please just port My Friendly Neighbourhood I’m begging).

A slightly lighter second half to the year but still full of games I absolutely can’t wait to get my hands on and play. There’s 17 games listed here, that’s 17 reviews to look forward too.
